The Effect Of Parenting Styles On Children

Every year over 4 million children are born in the United Sates alone.  As a result, this means that each year there are millions of new parents as well. It is important to realize that with each set of new parents, each will have their own opinion on how to properly raise their children.  More specifically, parents tend to have different views on how to effectively discipline their children. When it comes to discipline, one of the most common parenting styles today is Authoritative parenting. I recently came across an article that displayed how one parent used the Authoritative parenting style in an ineffective manner. It is my goal to highlight the fine line between how authoritative parenting can be effective versus the way it can be detrimental to both a child’s mental and physical health.

Before examining a specific case in which this method is used, it is important to understand what can be classified as Authoritative parenting. Authoritative parents typically establish rules and guidelines and in return expect their children to follow them. However, this method is more lenient than the concept of “what I say goes.” When a child doesn’t meet the expectations and rules of an authoritative parent, the parents tend to be more nurturing and forgiving. The goal of these parents is to be assertive but not restrictive. Also, when is comes to discipline it they choose to support rather than to punish.

This topic caught my attention when an Australian teenager and her mother caused quite a buzz on social media. The incident began when the teen allegedly preformed a streak of disobedient behaviors that sent her mother off the deep end. Enraged at her daughter’s actions, the mother sought out to punish her daughter by selling her “One Direction” concert tickets that she had received as a gift. Most readers agreed that this was an appropriate example of Authoritative parenting; however the mother’s description that accompanied the tickets on eBay is where some questioned her intentions. The mother, quite frankly, set out to inform all interested buyers of the disobedient behaviors of her daughter by posting,

“YOU all LIED to us about sleep overs so you could hang like little trollops at an older guys HOUSE????? Pffft!! I find it HIGHLY amusing that you girls think you invented this stuff. Tricks like this on OUR parents is how HALF of you were conceived…”

Later in the post she goes on to state that she is not meant to be her daughters friend, but rather her mother. She also mentions that it is her job as a parent to provide her daughter with proper boundaries that enable her to become a responsible adult. These boundaries that the mother mentions are similar to those of an Authoritative parent. However, the attitude in which she sought out to discipline her child crossed the fine line between what defines effective and ineffective Authoritative parenting.

When examining this specific case it is easy to relate to the mother and understand her frustration. In the same sense, it is easy for me as a teenager myself to sympathize with the daughter because of the public humiliation that was involved with her mother’s post. Regardless of the mother’s intentions, it is questionable whether she was aware of the possible repercussions of her actions. According to Journal of Family Violence, “Parental use of aggressive discipline, specifically psychological aggression, has been shown to increase the risk for a number of problem behaviors in children and adolescents later on in life.” In other words, this means the aggressive manner in which the mother sought out to enforce her boundaries could increase the likelihood of “problem behaviors” in the future. These same problem behaviors could lead to actions that could affect the child for the rest of their lives in both a mental and physical aspect.

In retrospect of this situation, I am certain that the teenager’s mother regrets some of her actions. If she were faced with this situation again, there would be several ways for her to be a more effective Authoritative parent. When it came to the mother enforcing her boundaries with her daughter, it would have been more effective for her to sell the tickets without venting on the eBay post. The mothers choice of making the inappropriate post will not only lead to more behavior issues with the daughter, but also the mother has lost all sense of maturity and sagacity with other adults. Another way that she could have been a more effect authoritative parent would have been to supportive of her daughter rather then to shame her on the web in front of millions of viewers.

As and adolescent myself, I can appreciate the approach that my own parents have taken when it comes to disciplining me. I think in many cases, such as the one discussed here, parents can often lose track of the influence they have on their children. Regardless of a parent’s opinion on discipline, it is important to acknowledge the fact that parents can have a positive or negative impact upon a child’s life. One of the most common parenting styles, Authoritative parenting, has a fine line that can determine how to effectively use this method. This is a significant factor when it comes to affecting a child’s physical and mental maturation and should be evaluated whenever disciplining a child.

Remixes and Remakes At Their Best

Today we live in an age filled with advances in technology. Often times it seems as if every month there is a new type of phone, television, or gaming system on the market. The common reaction of consumers is to be filled with awe after some of these products are released, and the media will declare that these products are “revolutionary” or “one of a kind”. However, both Kirby Ferguson and David Gurney have studied products and how they are developed and it is not only their belief, but my belief as well, that the majority of inventions or creative products on the market today are either remixes or remakes of existing products. In Ferguson’s series “Everything’s a Remix” he explains that many products are based off of preexisting material and are transformed into new media through a process of copy, transform, and combine. This process can be used with music, movies, or any consumer product that is on the market today. In Gurney’s article entitled “Recombinant Comedy, Transmedial Mobility, and Viral Video” he discusses more specifically how videos on the Internet go viral. One of his main points was that many videos gain their popularity from remixes or remakes of the original videos. He explains that the reason why these remixes become so popular is because they incorporate ideas or thoughts from several types of new media with the original work. A soon to be released remix or remake is the Samsung Galaxy smart watch. This product incorporates Ferguson’s ideas of copy, transform, and combine in many ways, and expresses how the majority of new technology and products are purely remixes and remakes.

The overall physical design of Samsung’s new watch is a prime example of Ferguson’s concept of copying. The smart watch features a basic silicon watchband and has a small computer screen as the watch face. Also, there are no major changes made to how consumers wear the smart watch. In fact, one of the commercials for the watch shows a series of clips from movies and television shows that feature watches with similar physical traits to their product. Since Samsung copied the appearance of their watch it allows consumers to have a sense of familiarity with the product. Basing the design off of a normal watch allows consumers to use their preexisting knowledge of how a watch works to feel comfortable using the smart watch. In this case it can be seen that the process of copying is an effective method of providing consumers with a feeling of familiarity.

The smart watch incorporates Ferguson’s concept of transformation by transforming preexisting technology and placing it in a watch. The smart watch offers an ingenious combination of capabilities from not only a watch but also a computer, camera, and phone as well. The concept of transformation can be easily explained with this example: Samsung did not invent the computer or telephone when they made this product, they simple took the technologies from a computer, phone, and camera and placed them into a watch. The biggest transformations that the smart watch offers are related to its phone and computer capabilities. The smart watch transforms typical cell phones or computers into a small screen about the size of a quarter. This transformation makes accessing personal information such as emails or text messages even easier than a cell phone or computer because the size of the watch and the fact that it is always on your wrist. This idea of transformation appeals to consumers because it allows them to access technologies they already love, in new and easier ways.

Combinations are another important concept when it comes to the development of products and ideas. When it comes to new ideas and inventions, most often these result in products that take preexisting materials and simply make them better. With the smart watch the ideas and functionality of a phone, computer, and a camera are combined into one unit that is easily accessible. Once again Samsung did not invent these technologies but rather they package them in an innovative way. In the same way music, movies, and other forms of media take concepts from others and place them in new sequences and scenes to create a new and original product. This relays off of Gurney’s findings related to viral videos and how they remake original work with other types of media forming new media. Some combinations can be as simple as peanut butter and jelly whereas others can be as complex and intricate as the smart watch. Either way, consumers often appreciate and enjoy when their favorite technologies are combined into one device.

Designers and inventors work every day to come up with new and creative ideas, but even though many of these new products appear to be original more often than not they are based off of preexisting materials. The new Samsung smart watch expresses how many products are developed through copying, transforming, and combining. Even though many view the concept that “nothing is original anymore” as negative, I feel as if it is not necessarily a bad thing. I view copying, transforming, and combing as an efficient way to incorporate new technologies with the old. For the example of the smart watch it copies the basic features of a standard watch, transforms the way we are able to use common technologies like a phone, computer, or camera and combines the functionality of several products into one single device. It is my prediction that Samsung will have a successful product in the long run because of the simplicity that the smart watch pairs with functionality. Whether you believe that remixing and remaking can be considered original or you consider it stealing others ideas, it is undeniable that almost every product, song, video, or any other type of media has been inspired by someone or something else. It is my opinion that these remixes and remakes can still result in intricate and beautiful media and products for everyone to enjoy.Image
